John Himmelfarb, Remains, Fermentation Fest 2016
John Himmelfarb (Chicago, IL) is an American artist with studios in Chicago and Spring Green. He graduated from Harvard College in 1968 and exhibited nationally as a painter before becoming a sculptor through the Kohler Arts/Industry program in 2007. He is the recipient of two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as other honors. A major traveling exhibition of his truck related imagery is currently on display at the Sioux City Art Center and includes Penelope, a truck sculpture previously shown at Farm/Art DTour.
Remains ( Map Stop No. 24) is part of a the series John has been developing since 2008, where he creates sculptures using real trucks. At first, the reason was simply that he wanted to make sculptures with a truck motif that were life size, but as they evolved, he realized that they had many other forces behind them, including the climate change motive of material reuse. John now acknowledges the many earlier artists and art movements in which he references in this series.
