Beyond the Tequila Region: A Mezcal Dinner

October 7, 2017, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Enjoy a family-style dinner while sampling five traditional mezcals and uncertified agave spirits, presented by master distiller Eduardo Angeles. During the dinner, learn about traditional fermentation and distillation methods used in rural Mexico.

Both meat and vegetarian options will be offered.

Lou Bank travels to rural Mexico to learn directly from the artisans who make artisanal and traditional agave spirits — what would be called “mezcal” if the Mexican government had any long-term vision. He brings the spirits back to the US, where he hosts tastings that raise money to improve quality of life in these rural communities. This work led to Lou found the non-profit SACRED which is an acronym standing for Saving Agave for Culture, Recreation, Education, and Development. The mission of the non-profit is to use traditional and artisanal agave spirits to improve the quality of life of children in rural Mexico. When he’s not doing that, he can be found fermenting chiles, running educational nonprofits, and rescuing dogs in Chicago.

Eduardo Ángeles is a maestro mezcalero from the village of Santa Catarina Minas in the state of Oaxaca Mexico. He began working with his father when he was 11 years old, producing agave spirits in the traditional, artisanal method his family has practiced for four generations.Lalo, as his friends call him, bottles his spirits under the brands Sacapalabras and Mezcal Lalocura, both of which are revered in Mexico, neither of which are available outside of Mexico.
